MusicYour Jam for the Weekend: Zayn Malik and M.I.A.'s Laid-Back 'Freedun'
We’ve been chilling out to this all week as we welcome (or eagerly await) fall weather.
Is it possible to not have a crush on Zayn Malik? Let's be honest—I have a crush on Zayn, you do too. In this year alone, the ex-One Directioner has dropped a pretty fun solo album, started dating Gigi Hadid, and somehow had exactly zero bad pictures taken of him. Landing a feature on M.I.A.'s new album, AIM, just adds to his hot streak. His airy vocals float all over the track like a horny ghost and it's, as he might say, pretty sick.
The track, "Freedun," can be pretty corny, but that makes it all the more endearing. Yeah, lyrics like "I'm a swagger man/rolling in my swagger van/from the People's Republic of Swaggerstan," might make you cringe, but can you blame M.I.A. and Zayn for sounding like they're really enjoying themselves? They're arguably the most famous brown people not named Shah Rukh Khan and they've both been pretty much killing it for their entire careers—and now they're hanging out together on the same track.
While you might miss the charged-up precision of M.I.A. tracks like "Bring The Noize" or "Galang," hearing Zayn sing a raga underneath Mathangi's playful talk-singing is probably gonna make South Asians across the world nod their heads. It's working with their best asset—casual confidence. While early reviews indicate that AIM isn't her strongest effort, this song makes us remember why we like M.I.A., and why we're all low-key rooting for Zayn.
