MoviesWatch Ed Helms and Owen Wilson Play Brothers in the Bastards Trailer
And their dad might be J.K. Simmons. Or Terry Bradshaw. Or Ving Rhames.
In an impressive feat of casting, Ed Helms and Owen Wilson play twins in the upcoming comedy Bastards. After their mother (Glenn Close) gets married, she confesses to them that the story she told them about their father dying of cancer is a lie, and that she actually doesn't know who their father is. This inspires a journey to find their biological father, aka a journey to find all the men her mother slept with in a short period of time.
Based on the trailer, it seems to be men with a great deal of gusto who you might be thrilled to discover is your dad. One is J.K. Simmons, a man with anger issues. In the trailer alone we see him smash a glass bottle and brandish a gun, which is exactly what I would have guessed a character in a brother-comedy played by J.K. Simmons would be like. There's also Terry Bradshaw and Ving Rhames, both of whom launch into odes about how good the mother was in bed. Spoiler alert: moms like to fuck because they are human beings, but sure, you probably wouldn't want to hear your mom described as a "dick whisperer." Or maybe you'd be proud! I don't know your life.
The rest of the movie is a typical road-trip comedy, with various adventures including picking up a hitchhiker (and making him promise he's not a serial killer), almost getting hit by a train, hitting a person with their car, having a woman fire a warning shot with a rifle, and some beachside relaxation (hey, you gotta take a break from a quest).
It seems like Helms and Wilson pair nicely as the odd-couple-as-brothers-duo, with Helms playing the more cautious academic type and Wilson (unsurprisingly) as the happy-go-lucky guy who wants an adventure. Together they are just the right balance of interesting and annoying. As J.K. Simmons shouts, "There are no way those two jackasses are my kids! They look like a couple of dickheads!" He's got a point.
