Fall TrendsHow to Look Like a Male Model This Fall
Long, lean, and tonal.
Every day of every month at GQ, we start your morning on Instagram with visual advice on What to Wear Today. But we want to go deeper. Give you the nuts and bolts of how to get the look into your wardrobe. Today we're talking up the most stylish way to wear color this fall, and how to do it like a genetic 1%-er.
Male models: they're just like you and me, but better looking with access to designer clothing made specifically to fit their long lean bodies. OK, fine, non-model types are at a slight disadvantage. But that's nothing to get upset about, and it certainly doesn't mean we mere mortals can't learn something from them. The handsome fella pictured above knows that, this fall, dressing in a tonal palette will win you major style points, especially when you stick to earth tones like brown and khaki. His combination of a paper bag-colored trench, ochre tee, burnt orange sweater, and warm brown trousers is neutral without being boring.
When choosing tonal separates you'll want to make sure each one works within the overall color palette, but you also need to shop for items that fit really well. As always, how the shoulders of a trench fit is most important but you also want to look for one that ends somewhere within an inch or two of your knees (too long and you'll look short, too short and you'll look like you made a mistake). As we edge into fall a few things to keep in mind: pants should continue to fit a little bit cropped; we love short-sleeved knit polo shirts, especially when the fit is slim (not tight); if you do decide to go for a mustard-hued tee, make sure to try it on as yellow is one of the hardest colors to get right. And finally, once you've put everything on, double check the state of your posture. Male models stand up straight and so should you.
