PoliticsHere's What Hillary Clinton Actually Said About Millennials
The truth about Clinton's "controversial" comments.
An audio recording of Hillary Clinton speaking at a private event has gone viral this weekend after it was published by a conservative publication. Some headlines would have you believe that this audio depicts the democratic candidate mocking millennials and Bernie Sanders supporters. This would be a juicy story. After all, the perception has been that Hillary Clinton struggles with young voters, and she will need them to show up for her in November. Audio of her being dismissive of them could be damning.
But is that what the audio actually shows? Nope. Not even close. Listen for yourself here:
And read the "offending" section:
CLINTON: Some are new to politics completely. They’re children of the
Great Recession. And they are living in their parents’ basement. They
feel they got their education and the jobs that are available to them
are not at all what they envisioned for themselves. And they don’t see
much of a future. I met with a group of young black millennials today
and you know one of the young women said, “You know, none of us feel
that we have the job that we should have gotten out of college. And we
don’t believe the job market is going to give us much of a chance.” So
that is a mindset that is really affecting their politics. And so if
you’re feeling like you’re consigned to, you know, being a barista, or
you know, some other job that doesn’t pay a lot, and doesn’t have some
other ladder of opportunity attached to it, then the idea that maybe,
just maybe, you could be part of a political revolution is pretty
appealing. So I think we should all be really understanding of that
and should try to do the best we can not to be, you know, a wet
blanket on idealism. We want people to be idealistic. We want them to
set big goals. But to take what we can achieve now and try to present
them as bigger goals.
In context, that doesn't read as inflammatory; that reads as empathy.
Look at it this way: We currently live in a world where Donald Trump's week of scandals involve his companies illegally doing business in Cuba, his foundation not having the proper paperwork to receive donations, his allegedly telling the managers of his golf club to fire hostesses for being unattractive, and, to top it all off, him going on an unhinged early morning Twitter rant attacking a woman he has verbally abused for gaining weight by telling the world to "check out" her sex tape, which, not for nothing, does not exist. He is a shit-spewing asshole who is unfit to be anyone's boss, let alone president of the United States. Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton's "scandal" is an out-of-context headline about the disillusionment of the millennial generation because she used the phrase "they are living in their parents’ basement." It's an odd double standard. If only there were an explanation…
Either way, in a little less than a month, you are going to get a chance don't vote. Don't vote for the shit-spewing asshole. The nation deserves better and so does the Oval Office carpet.
