Not a male, not a female? “Gucci MX” got ‘Genderless Shopping’ for ya!

Since the beginning of fashion, change has been the most constant… and Gucci keeps plugging in to this loop with its recent release of Gucci MX Collection.

Gucci’s collections set out to deconstruct preconceived binaries and question how these concepts relate to our bodies. Celebrating self-expression in the name of all gender equality, the House presents MX.
“Dissolving lines of the gender divide in the name of self-expression.”

Gucci MX Collection is a category of fashion on its online shopping website where genderless fashion can be purchased.

As reported by i-D, Gucci MX will feature the brand’s collections — starting with Pre-Fall and FW20 — using only gender-neutral models to style the pieces. The move to launch Gucci MX is a first in the luxury fashion world, and certainly sets a precedent for other brands to pay attention to.

“The House’s collections emphasize the dissolving lines of the gender divide in the name of self-expression,” the Gucci MX webpage also states. “Playing with the constructive nature of gender, the MX project underlines the performative nature of what we wear, presenting masculinity and feminity as relative concepts.”

Gucci MX divides products into four categories: Ready to Wear, Handbags and Luggage, Shoes, and Accessories. Sizing for the pieces is, of course, gender-neutral as well. Back in May, The New York Times already reported on the gender-fluid shopping section, writing that it was the just the latest venture from Alessandro Michele, the brand’s creative director, to embrace “gender fluidity and inclusivity.” Then, the brand also announced it was taking a seasonless approach going forward.

In a time when fashion brands are tasked with finding ways to be forward-thinking, Gucci has made a trailblazing choice to launch this new section and it will hopefully encourage other luxury brands to follow suit.

1/9 Gucci announces MX, a curated selection across categories and collections designed by @alessandro_michele that defy traditional stereotypes, celebrating liberty and self-expression. MX is celebrated by artist @melekzertal in a specially commissioned comic strip ahead of the September launch of Issue 4 of @frankenstein_magazine—the Milan-based publication art directed the work. In this first illustration, the professor is quoted saying “Gender identity is not something static, instead it is dynamic and it is constituted by our daily behaviour and self-expression”. The professor wears a look from MX of a coat, denim pants and #GucciEyewear. MX is born from the 5-year creative vision of #AlessandroMichele’s collections which take shape in gender fluidity and freedom to express who you are.
