After appearing on several spring 2018 runways and seen on the Kardashians, bike shorts officially have the fashion world’s stamp of approval
Cycling shorts are tight, stretchy leg coverings that stop above the knee and often contain the bottom, thighs, and genitals of an obsessive pedaller. They are aerodynamic and allow your legs to move freely while you exercise. And they keep you relatively warm and dry. But, cycling shorts are at the cutting edge of fashion.
Just over a year ago, Kim Kardashian West attempted to bring back one of the more questionable trends of the Eighties and Nineties: cycling shorts. However, instead of styling them with an oversize brightly colored T-shirt like a character in Saved By The Bell might have done, she wore them with a slinky lace top, a leather jacket and – of course – extravagant strappy heels.
Since then, the reality star has refused to give up on their comeback and has been seen styling them with everything from corsets and tiny vests to denim jackets and furry sliders.
Kim, 36, first started wearing bike shorts last summer
While the internet may have had mixed feelings about Kardashian’s attempt at bringing the sportswear back into our day-to-day wardrobes, we can all stand corrected. Designers, models and fellow celebrities have now followed suit, making the knee-length, skintight short a contender to be one of the biggest trends of the summer. And due to our obsession with all things athleisure, it’s not altogether that surprising.
Top designers Off-White, Dolce and Gabbana and Dion Lee took note of her sporty bottoms and sent the spandex shorts down their spring 2018 runways
Black cycling shorts are likely to be the latest must-have after they appeared on the Dior catwalk last week. The French fashion house has already made surprise hits out of a feminist slogan T-shirt and leather berets and Dolce & Gabbana also sent skin-tight cycling shorts down the catwalk this month. At Paris Fashion Week, it began and ended with bike shorts. For her debut as the creative director of Chloé, Natacha Ramsay-Levi sent out just-below-the-knee trousers in denim, khaki, and caramel worn with knee-high boots. Off-White closed with Naomi Campbell in ivory bike shorts and a blazer. Y/Project’s trendy slashed jeans were shown yesterday at knee length, while spandex bike shorts appeared at both Dolce & Gabbana in Milan and Dion Lee in New York.
Both MSGM and Alexander Wang showed the trend in their spring/summer 2017 collections. While the former teamed the tight shorts with exaggerated volume, Alexander Wang (who also showed a pair in his H&M collaboration back in 2014) made them leather and styled them with a sporty, cropped jacket.
For Cruise 2017, Chanel took cycling shorts to Cuba and gave them a tropical spin, while Maria Grazia Chiuri showed a more tailored, slightly longer length and far more wearable version in her first collection for the house in spring/summer 2017.
