MoviesWhoa, Donald Glover as Star Wars' Young Lando Calrissian?
According to a new report we desperately hope is true, Glover would take over the role first played by Billy Dee Williams.
A young Lando Calrissian will appear in the upcoming Han Solo anthology film, The Wrap reported Thursday. And now Birth.Movies.Death. reports that directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller already have a first choice to play young Lando: comedian and rapper Donald Glover.
The former Community star is no stranger to blockbusters at this point, having picked up roles in The Martian and Spider-Man: Homecoming the past few years. Glover has also been working on the autobiographical-ish comedy show Atlanta which is set to debut on FX next month. Lord and Miller, who've directed the wildly successful Jump Street films and The Lego Movie, would seem to be the perfect directors to coax a unique performance from Glover, who has the charisma and acting chops to put his own spin on the Lando role.
Of course, it will be interesting to see how far Lord and Miller take the Han Solo movie in a light-hearted direction. Casting Glover doesn't necessarily mean the movie will be more comedic, but Glover has offered some humor in just about all his popular roles to this point—and Billy Dee Williams' Lando brought a note of levity to the original trilogy, too.
Alas, Glover-as-Lando is just a report for now, and far from set in stone. But in any event, Han Solo: A Star Wars Story is scheduled to be released on May 25, 2018, and will star Alden Ehrenreich as Solo.
