TVWatch Samantha Bee, Stephen Colbert, and Seth Meyers Deliver Their Best Trump Takedowns
A trio of late night hosts answered a fawning Jimmy Fallon interview with strong Trump rebukes.
It can't be a coincidence that a only a few days after Jimmy Fallon drooled all over Donald Trump, Samantha Bee, Seth Meyers and Stephen Colbert—talk show TV's political conscience—each offered their own strong takedowns of Trump and his latest controversy. To recap, Fallon invited Trump on his show last week and failed to challenge him on literally anything, instead choosing to sniff the farts of a presidential candidate who is openly hostile toward women, blacks, Muslims, Mexicans, and other groups of people.
Bee, amid pointed commentary on the Republicans’ fringe conspiracy theories and Trump's relationship with Roger Ailes, went directly after Fallon, criticizing the host for enabling Trump. Bee got right to the heart of the matter, explaining how The Tonight Show cares more about ratings than racism, and how the show is privileged enough that it can pal around with Trump with no consequence. While Bee succinctly explained why Fallon's Trump interview was total bullshit, Colbert and Meyers both went after the candidate's remarks on the "birther" movement, the campaign Trump started years ago to question the legitimacy of the Obama presidency. Trump seemingly reversed course last week, stating that he believed Obama was born in the U.S. and that it was Hillary Clinton who started the birther discussion in 2008. Both Meyers and Colbert had very strong opinions as to whether that allegation held up to scrutiny.
While the other late-night hosts' latest round of Trump takedowns may or may not be efforts to distance themselves from Fallon, that certainly doesn't make them any less valid. If your trust in journalism is low or you believe the media created Trump, there's no excuse for not knowing the truth—even if you have to get it from a late-night talk show host.
