HumorTrevor Noah Lit Into Matt Lauer on The Daily Show and It Was Glorious
Last night The Daily Show returned to its old self.
People like to give Trevor Noah shit and it's understandable. Replacing a beloved cultural icon like Jon Stewart is not an easy thing to do: Even when you do well by normal TV show standards, you're probably going to pale in comparison to, you know, one of the best political comedians in the history of television. It's because of this that I firmly believe that people need to give Noah time to find himself and figure out his version of The Daily Show. Last night, while talking about Matt Lauer's disastrous moderating job at NBC's Commander-in-Chief Forum, we got a glimpse of what a post-growing pains version of Noah's Daily Show might look like, and the results were extremely promising.
Noah took Lauer to task for not just his insane decision to focus so much time on Clinton's emails that by the time he got an actual important military question he had to rush Clinton's response, but also for Lauer's refusal to call Trump out on his blatant lie about his Iraq position. I especially enjoyed Noah's impression comparing Trump to a toddler. But the haymaker came when Noah showed Lauer is able to ask tough questions… to One Direction.
He may not have been Jon Stewart, but for a few minutes I stopped missing Jon Stewart. That's a pretty good first step.
