Gentleman's QuartersTour the Eclectic West Village Digs of the Couple Behind NYC Design Store Calliope
For Michael and Caroline Ventura, work and home overlap. Calliope, their West 12th Street design store stocked with contemporary and mid-century items ranging from vintage coffee pots to ‘60s surf magazines, is two floors below their sun-filled apartment. Michael runs a strategy and design practice, Caroline designs and produces a jewelry line, and together they wanted to create a retail destination that reflected their love of discovering and spotting unique wares. The 34,000 square foot building they came across five years ago was the perfect space, but didn't come without its own set of challenges. "It had mold. It has asbestos. It had an illegal squatter," Caroline remembers. "Everything needed to be gutted and abated, but we really wanted to bring back the original bones of the space and honor what it's original purpose was—a ship chandlery, sail making factory, and flop house for sailors." We'd say those sailors would be impressed with these digs now.
