MoviesThis New Rats Trailer Is the Most Horrifying Movie Trailer of the Year
Your underworld nightmares come to life in a new… documentary.
If all other things were equal, rats really wouldn't be all that bad. They are small furry four-legged creatures that will bite if provoked and tend to avoid people, or anything bigger than them. That is the basic description for lots of animals we love, like hamsters, or certain breeds of dog. Trouble is, all other things aren't equal, and rats are evil little bastards. They wallow in filth and carry diseases and can climb up sewage pipes straight up to your goddamn toilet. They are, as historical records and the fables of various cultures and faiths have claimed, a goddamn plague upon this earth, and they probably outnumber us all. Thank you, Morgan Spurlock, for reminding me of all this crap.
You know Morgan Spurlock, probably. He's the guy who became famous for exposing himself to things no one really wants to be exposed to because they're disgusting—and, through the films he makes, he exposes us to them too. This holds true for the majority of his work, from Super Size Me to One Direction: This Is Us, and it definitely holds true for his latest documentary: the simply titled, real-life horror story Rats.
Unlike Super Size Me, however, Spurlock is nowhere to be found in the trailer for Rats, probably because the film's subject matter is equal parts fascinating and horrifying enough to just point cameras at and roll film. Observe:
To hear Spurlock's film tell it, rats are only getting worse, slowly becoming resistant to poisons and are deviously smart and probably just hedging their bets until we all die of whatever the doomsday scenario du jour is—be it global warming or hackers or Donald Trump—so they can just overrun us all and rule this planet like the trash lords they are. Until then, just know they're out there, getting braver, smarter, stronger.
