ShirtsThere Are A Lot of Crazy Expensive Designer T-Shirts Out There Right Now
There's a certain type of dude who wears a T-shirt that tops $400. There's the die-hard brand devotee, the one with too much money to burn, the guy who plays the designer resale game like a pro, and the sneaky bastard who actually gets it for free (sup, celebs). For the rest of us, there isn't a T-shirt in our closets that costs $90, let alone $400, because we wear them (and treat them) for what they are: wardrobe basics—not prized fashion swag. Still, it's sort of interesting to take a look at the crazy designs that come out each season and why they promise to hold their value—or at least make a scene in the moment. Here, five of Fall 2016's priciest, flashiest T-shirts on offer and what significance they play in the brand's larger inspiration for the season.
Gucci Peanuts T-shirt
Everyone wants to get their hands on some Gucci swag these days, which includes the brand's Peanuts-themed T-shirts and basics for Fall 2016. The cartoon pieces made an appearance on the runway in January where Alessandro Michele explained that the collection was inspired by Marxist theorist Walter Benjamin as well as Snoopy, who was also "like a philosopher".
Vetements Dylan McKay T-shirt
Demna Gvasalia was in "a dark place" for Fall 2016, resulting in a collection that featured big, intimidating shoulder pads, chain details, and pentagram motifs on clothes. Angsty slogans adorned the T-shirts and hoodies such as the phrase "May the bridges I burn light the way"; a quote widely attributed to Dylan McKay on 90210.
Versace Universe Medusa T-Shirt
Versace riffs on its medusa logo every season, but this fall's take is straight-up otherworldly. Set on another planet to coincide with the brand's "Space Camp" theme for Fall 2016, the T-shirts have a kitschy '70s feel that makes them already look like collectibles.
Givenchy heavy metal T-shirt
For his fall collection Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci took inspiration from the heavy metal scene in Botswana, captured by South African photographer Frank Marshall in 2012. The T-shirts in the collection feature blurred-out nods to bands like Iron Maiden, patched together like a quilt.
Dolce & Gabbana gun show T-Shirt
To coincide with the brand's spaghetti western Fall 2016 show theme, Dolce & Gabbana released a series of black and white T-shirts and hoodies featuring shoot 'em up paraphernalia with artisanal details.
Philipp Plein Superman 'S' foil T-shirt
Here's one way to achieve Cam Newton levels of sartorial swagger from the pages of GQ.
Valentino embroidered butterfly tie dye T-shirt
Snakes are so hot right now. But you know what's almost as cool as snakes? Butterflies (we're 100% serious). We've spotted them on everything from Gucci jackets to Supreme tie dye pants, but no one has taken the winged insects to luxe hippie levels like Valentino.
Loewe mushroom T-shirt
It's won't set you back as much as a whole white truffle might (and, okay, you can't eat it), but next to the food world's most precious ingredient, this is the coolest fungi money can buy right now.
