PhotosSouth African Model Cassie Matthews Is Your Next Instagram Infatuation
She's about to charm the pants off the entire world.
We spend a lot of time on Instagram (no, really—a lot of time), and when we're not living vicariously through our favorite FOMO-inducing accounts, we're checking on some particularly talented users. So when our GQ castings team finds a ’grammer worth shouting out, we think it's our duty to share him or her with you, dear followers.
Up today, model Cassie Matthews, a born beach bum from New Zealand by way of South Africa. Growing up by the beach, it's no wonder Matthews is extremely comfortable in a bikini. But, combine that with her entrepreneurial spirit (her YouTube tutorials are mesmerizing), unique accent, and dedication to awe-inspiring fitness and you've got a can't-fail recipe for success. But don't take our word for it, check her out below and of course click follow.
Where are you right now?
Just landed in Sydney! I flew in from New York for an upcoming shoot.
Where did you grow up?
I was born in KwaZulu Natal in Durban, South Africa, a beautiful coastal town. I moved to New Zealand when I was four and grew up in Auckland, also by the beach.
If you weren’t a model, what career would you pursue?
I'd be an entrepreneur. I want to create a conscious business that helps people or contributes in some way.
What is your mantra? (If you don't have one, make one up. We'll wait.)
Live in the present moment. Happiness isn't the destination, it's the journey.
What makes you feel sexy?
Being 100% comfortable in my own skin and loving my body. A little Tom Ford Black Orchid and some expensive lingerie doesn't hurt either!
Where have you never been but want to go?
Do you read the comments?
Yeah sometimes, when I get a minute. Most people are super sweet, and the occasional weird comment cracks me up.
What is the craziest thing you’ve done on a shoot?
Hmm, it's a toss up between posing on the slippery rocks of a seaside cliff in high heels (I have no idea how I didn't fall off because I'm such a clutz, haha), driving a vintage Mustang convertible down the wrong side of the road on Route 66 in the desert, and dressing up as superwoman. They were all pretty fun.
How do you spend your time off?
I love getting active and trying new things. My favorite things to do are boxing, Megaformer resistance training, yoga, and indoor rock-climbing. If I can get to a beach I love stand-up paddle boarding. I also love just hitting the streets in New York with friends, hanging out at local cafés and restaurants and getting lost in the vintage stores. Such a cool city with an infectious energy, it's impossible to be bored.
