CelebrityRihanna's 'Work' Has Taken Grinding International, Just Look at Usain Bolt
Bolt was seen bringing 2016's hottest dance move to Rio.
Drake and Rihanna's master plan to bring grinding back to the forefront of civilian dancing is finally paying major dividends. After a summer of Drake and RiRi publicly grinding to her hit single "Work," others have started joining in on the fun, such as decorated Olympian Usain Bolt and a female friend of his in Brazil, who were caught grinding to the song as Bolt celebrated his 30th birthday in Rio.
There are a couple things to unpack here. First, did grinding ever really go away? Not really, but for much of our lives it has been confined to fraternity basements, dark corners of house parties, and bar mitzvahs. (In fact, as a bar mitzvah veteran, I can tell you nothing was more freeing than letting go of your inhibitions and agreeing to join a grind train after your fourth Shirley Temple.) In 2016, though, our music and sports heroes can grind unapologetically for all to see. Even if they're being, uh, filmed surreptitiously.
And as for Bolt, his grinding is pretty standard fare. He's certainly not as into it as Drake, and he can afford to move his hips a little. Bolt did do something I've never seen anyone else do mid-grind, however—and that is ask someone for a hat. Perhaps Bolt was making a last-gasp effort to go incognito. Usain, my man, there's nothing to be afraid of. We can all grind as much as we want to now.
