When you're Donald Trump's running mate, taking the high road is pretty tough.

At a Barbara Streisand-hosted fundraiser in New York City on Friday, Hillary Clinton opined that half of Trump's supporters fit into a "basket of deplorables," a term previously applied only to Halloween night hauls from all-dentist neighborhoods.

Offering this readily-hashtaggable slogan to Angry Trump Supporter Twitter was certainly ill-advised (NOTE: do not click on that link if you averse to lots of bald eagle-related Twitter avatars). But the ham-handed response offered today by Trump's confused Dad of a running mate, Mike Pence, isn't much better. During an interview Monday, Wolf Blitzer asked Pence if former KKK Grand Wizard and loud, proud Trump supporter David Duke would fit within Clinton's "deplorables" basket. In response, Pence picked a remarkable hill to die on.

PENCE: As I told you the last time I was on, I'm not really sure
why the media keeps dropping David Duke's name. Donald Trump has
denounced David Duke repeatedly. We don't want his support and we
don't want the support of people who think like him.

BLITZER: So you call him a deplorable. You would call him "deplorable."

PENCE: No, I'm not in the name-calling business, Wolf. You know me
better than that.

Ahem. I'm not in the name-calling business. My man, can I suggest you check, I don't know, your boss' Twitter feed first?

Well, sure. But at least Trump didn't say anything like that TODAY, right? Right? At least that's good ne—

Might want to take a different tack on this one, Pence.

Look, if you're going to apply the D-word to anyone, David Duke is about as deserving a target as exists. The Trump campaign's refusal to do so is as cravenly on-brand as ever. But Pence, buddy, pal: blithely insisting that your refusal to do so stems from, of all things, a distaste for name-calling is hilariously disingenuous, even for you guys. Unless Trump suddenly gets into the apology business, maybe you should make peace with the line of work you're currently in, Mr. Pence.
