MoviesHot Damn, MacGruber 2 Is Actually Happening
Since 2010, the world has been neatly divided into two categories: People who love MacGruber, and people who haven't seen MacGruber yet. The Will Forte-starring comedy—based on the recurring SNL sketch of the same name—is a hilariously violent (and gloriously fucking profane) homage to every cheesy action movie you've ever loved, and a sequel would only have raised the stakes. Unfortunately, MacGruber grossed just $8.5 million on a $10 million budget—a box-office failure that seemed to permanently relegate the would-be franchise to the shelf of beloved-but-underperforming movies we call "cult classics."
But in an age when pretty much everything gets a sequel or a reboot or a Netflix prequel series or whatever, MacGruber fans never stopped hoping for another MacGruber—and as his Hollywood star has risen, Will Forte has sounded a little more bullish about the possibility of a MacGruber 2. In 2012, Forte said he didn't think anybody in their right mind would be willing to fund it; by 2015, Forte was saying he thought there was "a realistic chance of getting it made," amid rumors that MacGruber 2 would emerge on Kickstarter, or had even somehow already been shot, with the movie equivalent of a Beyoncé album-style drop on the horizon.
Still, none of that hopeful chatter was anything resembling real, actual confirmation of MacGruber 2. Which is why it’s such a big deal that MacGruber director Jorma Taccone just tweeted this script—helpfully clarifying that it's "no joke," because it’s always kind of hard to tell when MacGruber is involved:
Unfortunately, that tweet is basically all we have to go on right now. So either the script for MacGruber 2 is still "super duper rough," or MacGruber 2: Super Duper Rough will be arriving in theaters shortly! (Please, please let it be the second one.) Either way, to paraphrase MacGruber, there's a big difference between winging it and seeing what happens. So let's see what happens.
