MoviesJason Sudeikis Will Star in a Stage Version of Dead Poets Society
Sudekis will take over the role made famous by Robin Williams.
Former Saturday Night Live star Jason Sudeikis is returning to his live-performance roots for a stage version of Dead Poets Society. Sudeikis will play the lead role made famous by the late Robin Williams, who starred as teacher John Keating in the 1989 film. The off-Broadway play is written by Tom Schulman, who is adapting the screenplay that netted him an Academy Award.
Sudeikis is stepping into big shoes for the Keating role. Williams was nominated for an Oscar for his performance, which will long be remembered as one of his most beloved movies. Williams’s turn as Keating deftly balanced his dramatic depths with his trademark humor. The film featured a strong cast overall, with future stars Ethan Hawke and Robert Sean Leonard playing students in the movie.
In addition to Sudeikis's live chops from his SNL days, the actor has taken on more dramatic roles of late, co-starring in films such as Race and The Devil in the Deep Blue Sea. Sudeikis also has parts in the upcoming science-fiction films Colossal and Downsizing.
The play is being directed by John Doyle, who helmed the successful revival of The Color Purple.
Previews of the show will start in late October before it opens on Nov. 17.
