Fall TrendsHow to Wear a Suit Like a CEO, No Matter Who You Are
Wear this double-breasted suit for a boost of business confidence.
Every day of every month at GQ, we start your morning on Instagram with visual advice on What to Wear Today. But we want to go deeper. Give you the nuts and bolts of how to get the look into your wardrobe. Today we're calling out the most powerful of all suits, the one to wear when you need an extra boost of business confidence.
In the movies, bosses dress the part. But in real life, some very powerful bosses go to work in a hoodie every day (looking at you Zuckerberg). Though this might be upsetting to the traditionalist, it's actually great news for the non-CEO set. If the old rules of style hierarchy are defunct, then you friend are free to dress for any role you want. Whether you're the office newbie or this is your twentieth time around the block, a peak lapel double-breasted suit will win you praise and authority.
Note however, that like many other stylish power moves you want to make sure you're wearing the most current version of this suit. That means the jacket should fit slim, but not tight. Watch out for fabric that pulls around the buttons when you're trying it on. The bottom of the jacket should end no lower than the bottom of your pants pockets and ideally should hit you mid hip. Remember, nothing looks more dated than oversized baggy suit jackets.
One last thing: When wearing a double-breasted suit, you must either keep the jacket buttoned, or take it off—no flapping wings allowed. As for what to wear with your suit, we like a knit tie in navy for some vintage appeal and a thin striped dress shirt to increase the of-the-moment feels. Top it all off with a light blue tipped pocket square to show that you, like a boss, are detail oriented. Now, start practicing your desk lean.
