Red CarpetHow Super Stylist Ilaria Urbinati Got 6 Leading Men Ready for the 2016 Emmy Awards
Ilaria Urbinati, the in-demand stylist to some of the best-dressed guys in the game (literally), had six big-name gents to dress tonight for the Emmy Awards: Tom Hiddleston, Rami Malek, Joel Kinnaman, Ty Burrell, Nikolaj Coster Waldau, and Will Forte. (Ilaria also dressed Unreal's Shiri Appleby and Game of Thrones' Hannah Murray, because why dress six people when you can dress eight?) We're talking six different top-to-toe looks for six different style POVs that have to impress on one of the biggest red carpets in the world. Easy, right? For Urbinati, it kind of is. That's why she's become the go-to image-maker for actors of a certain caliber looking to make a stylish impression on and off a step and repeat. So how does the A-list stylist juggle the demands of her job on a day like Emmy morning?
“We worked that puzzle like a math equation for days until we finally figured it out" Urbinati told us. Here's a bit more from the tuxedo whisperer on how the whole thing went down—plus, how she chose each pitch-perfect suit.
"Luckily, some of our guys like dress themselves so we dropped to them early—all prepped, pressed, and labeled. Then I had one assistant go do Shiri, then run to the airport to get Nikolaj ready in the car. Another assistant picked up Ty from the Rams game (his Rams gear was on point) and then get him ready in the car as well. Meanwhile, I went to Tom’s hotel to do a last-minute fitting with him and the tailor from Gucci. He didn't fly in for his fitting until two days prior so we still had some work to do on his tux. After that I checked in with Hannah, who was staying in the same hotel, and then rushed off (in horrible traffic) to get Rami ready.”
High of the Day:
“Drinking champagne with Rami and his family before he headed out.”
Least Glamorous Moment of the Day:
“Tom and Hannah were staying at the same hotel so schlepping a trillion garment and shopping bags and a styling kit for both of them through the hotel, while whizzing past every other celebrity and stylist in LA, was definitely not the chicest moment.”
Make-It-Work Moment of the Day:
“Nikolaj wasn't able to come to LA for a fitting at all because he's shooting Game of Thrones. I had the set costumer for the show take his measurements and had Isaia make him a custom tux from a cut and fabric of my choosing. Isaia's tailor was able to do a quick fitting with him in New York yesterday and make the adjustments on the spot. He then flew to LA, with his tux in hand, and I sent one of my assistants in the car to pick him up with all the accessories options.”
The Mood Enhancer:
“Tom and I always listen to The Jungle Book soundtrack during fittings because we are huge f-ing nerds, and it helps us relax.”
The Only-On-Emmys-Night Reward
“I haven't had gluten in three years but I decided to reward myself and order a pizza from Mozza and watch the Emmys with my best friend. You’ve got to enjoy the glory part of the experience—not just the guts! This year was stressful because we dressed so many people but it seemed like a breeze compared to last year. Last year I went into labor on Emmys day.”
Tom Hiddleston in Gucci
"Tom texted me that he wanted to do a tux with piping on the lapel, which Gucci has been doing recently, so we had two Gucci tuxes made and then pulled a few other options from them. We ended up going with one of the non-custom options, which never happens, because it fit him really well. He's been doing Thor so he lost some weight in the waist and gained some weight in the chest and it just ended up being the best cut on him."
Rami Malek in Dior
"I spoke to Dior early on and asked them to send me whatever they had that wasn't black or navy. Rami and I just wanted to do something we hadn't really done before. What I loved about this tux was that the lapel wasn't satin or grosgrain, it was the same material as the jacket, which I thought was really modern and beautiful. And then we did these rose-gold Mont Blanc studs, which added to the old-fashioned feel."
Joel Kinnaman in Zegna
"This is the biggest tux I've ever put on anyone in my life. I keep telling Joel, like, you've got to stop working out. We did surgery on that tux but my tailor is a genius and it turned out really well after a couple of fittings. In terms of the style, Joel is like this Swedish tough guy, so I thought something minimalist and black would suit him well. His style is different than any of my other clients, and I really like that."
Ty Burrell in Strong Suit
"Ty is nominated for awards all the time, and we've done every bold tux under the sun with him, so coming up with something different is tough. I thought this rich blue velvet tux was beautiful, and it's from a smaller designer that's a little more unexpected, so it just worked. Ty plays this super nerdy dad on TV but he's actually one of the coolest guys I know. He dresses really well and drives this amazing vintage car…"
Nikolaj Coster Waldau in custom Isaia
"A lot of time when you do a midnight-blue tux the lapel is black but since we were doing custom, I took the opportunity to do a blue lapel. The suit also had a little bit of sheen to it, which photographed nicely. Nikolaj is super broad and he's got a very square face so I wanted a wide lapel that had a soft curve to it to balance out his features."
Will Forte in Isaia
"The thing about Will is he's a comedian, and so he never wants to be the guy who shows up too styled or too "Hey, look at me". I convinced him to wear this bold blue tux tonight though, which was a little bit of a departure for him, and I think it turned out really great."
