ShirtsHow Christian Slater Predicted the Most Popular Shirt of Summer '16
The actor and his hawaiian shirt circa the early 90s.
Welcome to TBT, a look back at the epic style moves from decades past. Up today: Our favorite come back kid (well not a kid anymore) and the floral print shirt we've been seeing on every stylish guy this summer, and that Christian Slater wore at least twice 24 years ago.
Who: Christian Slater
Where: Beverly Hills, California
Why: The early 90s would have been very different without Christian Slater's sarcastic voice, squinting gaze, or effortlessly cool flop of hair. His roles in movies like Heathers (technically 1988, but equally important), Pump Up the Volume, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and True Romance solidified him as Gen X's wisecracking cool kid. He was bigger than his nerdy britches, a ballsy heartthrob for cool girls. And he was ahead of his time when it came to fashion. Almost a quarter of a century ahead it turns out. In 1991 at the premiere of the film My Own Private Idaho, Slater wore a large scale floral print vacation shirt unbuttoned and layered over a Japanese print T-shirt. That's right, the very same shirt we have been talking up all summer. The one you should have already bought and worn over and over again.
Slater's pleated chinos are much to write home about but the way he's got his shirt tucked in is perfectly alined with another 2016 summer trend and so is his belt. And then, nearly a year later at the premiere of the movie Hoffa, Slater wore the same shirt but this time buttoned-up and under a glen plaid suit jacket. The combination is not something we would necessarily get behind today but the shirt totally is. The take away here is that fashion is cyclical, duh, and that Christian Slater will always be cool.
