Because cats can sleep anywhere.
Casper, the company known for one super cozy mattress with a 100-day return policy and for their cheeky cartoon ads in a gradient of pastel hues, has announced its next product. In November the company launched their second and third products: the Casper sheet set and pillow. This made sense, because what does a person with a mattress need next, after all? But now, in a business move that's part genius and part 🤔, they have announced their fourth product: a Casper bed for dogs. The bed comes in three colors and sizes, and is priced between $125 for the small and $225 for the large. Which kind of makes it a bed for the dog 1%.
Honestly, few people could've seen this coming. The company's ads feature a whole host of sleepers: humans, wolves, monsters, donuts, an egg and her bacon lover, and sure dogs. But dogs are certainly not featured more than monsters.
If we examine the life cycle of an affluent millennial, however, a dog does usually come before marriage and baby. Still, that leaves a gaping hole for cats, and by proxy, cat people. Tired of speculating, we called up Neil Parikh, Casper's Chief Operating Officer, to ask him.
Why dogs and not cats?
Honestly it started with our customers. Right after we started Casper, we got tons of people buying Caspers for their dogs—like twin-size beds. So the inspiration just came from people asking us to make something for dogs. It's definitely been there for cats as well. But a dog mattress is just a more common thing. Cats can sleep on almost anything.
So, how is the Casper dog bed different from the Casper human bed?
It turns out dogs are a lot better at auto-regulating their temperature than we are. So you don't need to add latex to the mattress but they do need a lot of support for their back, which is why we added memory foam. They love to burrow so we added a little bolster that's inset. Our dog beds are waterproof to make them really easy to clean. Instead of human centered design this is dog centered design.
Okay, you probably won't tell me this, but what do you guys have in the works? What's next?
I can't say yet, but we've got another, at least, five things in the pipeline that we are currently testing. I can say that we're committed to helping people and animals get better sleep.
Do you plan on designing products for every type of sleeping arrangement? Camping? Hammocks?
For sure! If you're going to build sleep as a platform, you might as well do it in different capacities. You know, we take naps, we sleep on airplanes, we go camping, we do it at hotels, at our partners places. Anywhere you might be sleeping we're thinking about how to make that sleep better.
If my dog hates the bed, can I send it back?
Yeah, with all of our products, same with our dog bed, you have a hundred days to try it out if you don't like it we'll take it back.
There you have it: the future of the on-demand mattress business is dogs. Now, a no-risk situation that could end with better sleep for your dog, though a really, really well-rested dog might pose other problems.
