Go ahead mix and match.

Every day of every month at GQ, we start your morning on Instagram with visual advice on What to Wear Today. But we want to go deeper. Give you the nuts and bolts of how to get the look into your wardrobe. Today we're walking you through pattern mixing, level 101. These fall suit and tie combinations are the perfect remedy for business casual fatigue.

Yesterday we celebrated the power of a presidential blue suit and though we stand by staples of business attire—black, gray, and navy tailoring—today we want to mix it up. Because you, unlike the President, probably aren't busy running the free world. You can afford to deviate from your weekday uniform once in a while. And what better way to deviate than by flexing some serious pattern-mixing swagger. See the check suit and houndstooth tie on 2015's September cover dude Stephen Colbert? It's a master class in two things you might not think of wearing together—until you do to resounding style praise.

Why this works is pretty easy to understand. The two patterns share a color palette—gray and darker gray, but they differ in scale—micro check meets medium-size houndstooth. This equation will work for any two patterns. But since we're ringing in the fall today, and calling out Mr. Colbert, here are three variations on his expert combination (ideal for power lunches in a midtown diner):
